But where did it all begin? To understand the Saratoga Race track better, we need to look for Saratoga history.
Saratoga history can be traced back to the 14th Century when the Native Americans used to regularly visit the Saratoga region to get magical mineral springs waters which were believed to have healing powers.

Following the successful first meet, John Morrissey was inspired to create a new venture to make the future competition more prominent and better. He enlisted his friends John Hunter, Leonard Jerome, and William Travers and together they formed the Saratoga Racing Association.
He immediately bought 125 acres of land and built a new outstanding grandstand, and that’s how the famous Saratoga racecourse was created.
In 1864, the Saratoga Racing Association named a Travers stakes race after William Travers one of the founding members who contributed immensely to the growth of the horse racing in Saratoga. As a coincidence, Mr. Traver’s horse, Kentucky won the first meet in the same year.
The Travers stakes race grew and became a prestigious horse racing event almost immediately. The track also known as the Midsummer derby brings together the best three-year-old horses to for a trophy and $1.25 Million cash reward
Since the inception of Saratoga race track, the race has been completed at four different distances which are;
*1 mile equivalent to 2.81 km- The race was from the year 1864 to the year 1889
*1 mile equivalent to 2.41 km- From 1890 to 1892
*1 mile equivalent to 2.1 km- from 1893 to 1894 and 1897
*1.21 miles equivalent to 1.81 km- from 1895 to 1901 and 1903
*1¼ miles equivalent to 2.01 km- from 1904 to date.
